Most Mumbai flats have the outdoor unit on a narrow ledge, in a duct, or boxed into a shaft, because there is nowhere else to put it. An outdoor unit works by throwing heat into the air around it. If that air cannot move away, it re-breathes its own hot air and the cooling drops.
This is worth checking before assuming the AC is faulty. A unit with a wall six inches from its back, or grille panels closed around it, is not broken — it is suffocating. Sometimes the fix is clearing the space, not touching the machine.
Through the monsoon the AC is used less, and the air is at its most humid. Moisture sits on the indoor coil and in the drain tray for weeks with nothing drying it out. That is what you smell on the first switch-on after the rains.
