How often should an AC be serviced in Chennai?

Twice a year suits most homes, and coastal homes usually need it. There is no winter break here, so the AC runs far more hours than one in north India, and the once-a-year advice written for those cities does not fit.

Why does my AC smell when I switch it on?

Humid air keeps the indoor unit damp, and the coil and drain tray never fully dry. That is what you are smelling. Wiping the filter does not reach it — those two parts need cleaning for it to go properly.

I live near the sea. Does that affect the AC?

Yes, and mainly the outdoor unit. Salt settles between the aluminium fins and corrodes them, so the unit throws out heat less well over time. Washing it properly removes what causes it, which is why it matters more here than inland.
