Why kitchen tiles feel sticky a day after you clean them

If the wall behind your hob feels tacky within a day of being wiped, you are not cleaning it badly. You are moving it around.

There is a specific complaint that comes up in humid cities more than anywhere else: the tiles behind the hob get wiped on Sunday and feel tacky again by Tuesday. People assume they are using the wrong product, or not scrubbing hard enough. Usually neither is true.

Splatter and film are two different things

Fresh splatter is what lands on a surface while you are cooking — visible droplets that a cloth removes easily. That is not what makes tiles sticky days later.

The sticky layer is cooking vapour that rose, cooled, and settled across a much wider area than the splatter did. It is thinner, it is even, and it covers the whole wall rather than a splash zone. Because it settles as a film rather than as droplets, it works into the texture of the tile and into the grout lines instead of sitting on top.

Why a cloth spreads it instead of lifting it

Dried grease flakes and comes off on a cloth. A film that is still soft does the opposite — it transfers. Some of it goes onto the cloth, and then the cloth carries it to the next surface it touches.

This is why in a humid kitchen the switch plates, the cabinet handles and the fridge door end up tacky even though nobody cooks on them. They are not collecting vapour directly. They are collecting it from the cloth.

A quick test: wipe one tile with a dry cloth and look at the cloth. If it comes away faintly greasy rather than dusty, the film is soft, and wiping is redistributing it.

Why humidity decides which problem you have

In a dry city, cooking film hardens over weeks into something closer to a varnish. It is difficult to remove but at least it stays where it is. In humid air the same film never fully hardens, so it stays mobile — softening slightly whenever the kitchen warms up and resetting when it cools.

Coastal kitchens get the extreme version of this. In Kochi, where coconut oil is common, the film cycles between solid and liquid with the room temperature, working a little deeper into the surface with each cycle.

What actually removes it

Degreasing rather than wiping. A degreaser breaks the film so it releases from the surface, and then it is removed rather than pushed around. The order matters if there is hard water scale underneath, which is common on the tiles immediately around a sink.

  1. Degrease first, so the surface underneath is actually exposed.
  2. Then descale, if there are mineral deposits under the film.
  3. Reversed, the descaler sits on the grease and never reaches the deposit.

That sequence explains why a descaler that worked at a previous home can seem completely useless in a new one. It is not the product. It is that something is in the way.

What slows it down

  • Check whether the chimney is actually extracting. If vapour is not being pulled out, it is landing on the walls.
  • Wipe the hob area while it is still warm after cooking, when the film has not yet set.
  • Use a separate cloth for the tiles and the rest of the kitchen, so the film is not carried to switch plates and handles.
  • Keep a window open during cooking where you can. Airflow moves vapour out of the room rather than up to the ceiling.

None of this removes an existing layer. It slows how fast the next one builds, which is the part within your control between cleans.
