Move-out cleaning: the order that protects your deposit
Most people clean at the wrong point in the move. Doing it in the right order costs less, works better, and matches what actually gets inspected.
In cities with heavy rental churn — Bengaluru, Gurgaon, Pune, Hyderabad — a large share of deep cleans are booked around a handover date. And a surprising number of them are booked at the wrong moment, which costs the tenant both money and result.
Clean after your things are out, not before
This is the single most common mistake. Cleaning a furnished flat and then removing the furniture leaves dust lines and marks exactly where each piece stood — and those are precisely what gets flagged at inspection. You have paid for the more expensive furnished package and produced the worse outcome.
An empty flat is cheaper to clean, faster to clean, and it is the condition your landlord will actually walk through. Book the unfurnished package for the flat size once your things are gone.
What gets looked at hardest
Inspections are not uniform, but the pattern is consistent across cities. The bathroom is the most scrutinised room, because neglect there is visible and hard to argue about. After that comes the kitchen, then anything that was fixed to a wall.
- Bathroom — scaled taps and shower heads, a fogged glass partition, dark grouting, a stained WC.
- Kitchen — grease on the platform back and underside, cabinet exteriors, the chimney or exhaust.
- Walls — hook and nail holes, marks where furniture rested, scuffs along skirting.
- Windows — channels and grills, which collect far more than people expect.
- Balcony — usually forgotten entirely until the walkthrough.
The things cleaning cannot solve
It is worth separating cleaning from repair before you spend on either. Nail holes need filling. Cracked grouting needs re-grouting. Chrome that has pitted will not come back. A wall with a genuine damp problem will show again within days of being cleaned, and that is a landlord matter rather than something you can scrub away.
A clean is often the cheapest way to establish which is which. Once every surface is genuinely clear, whatever reappears quickly is a repair issue and you have a much stronger position discussing it.
A realistic expectation about deposits
Cleaning puts the flat in a defensibly clean condition, and that is the part within your control. What is ultimately deducted also depends on wear, damage and the terms of your agreement. Anyone promising that a clean guarantees a full deposit back is overselling it.
What it does reliably do is remove the easiest and most common reason for a deduction, and it does so at a fraction of what an unhappy landlord will charge for arranging the same work themselves.
If you are the one moving in
The reverse holds and is worth planning for. A clean booked before your furniture arrives is the most effective one you will book in that home — wardrobes, cabinets, bathrooms and kitchen surfaces can all be done inside and out while nothing is in the way. If your possession date and your shifting date are a few days apart, that gap is the slot to use.
